(within legal usage restrictions naturally…) Currently updating a clients website to use a particular font that they have in their headings. The font looks really cool, but creating them with images is less google friendly that having a proper text heading in there. This is where cufon comes in. It allows your webdeveloper to use your favourite font but it retains readability (ie searchability) by the search...
Read MoreThat’s right folks – with this becoming my full time career at the end of the year, BCG Webdesign is now a limited company. Feels weird being a company director… More admin stuff to do between getting some new business but plans are moving forward.

Read MoreAs a keen WordPress user, some of my biggest sites are in WordPress, I always approach a new WordPress release with some caution. I have never had any bad experiences that haven’t been my own fault with WordPress updates and Plugin installs but it pays to be cautious when you have client’s websites at stake! So I resisted the urge to just click the ‘Update Now’ button on the backend and waited until I had some spare time on the weekend. Databases are backed up daily so it was just a case of taking a download of all the sites (minus my hundreds of images) and uploading the WordPress 3.1 update over the top. Everything went fine – Multi-user update okay – plugins all working – sites all back up and running....

Read MoreIf I can’t get to a PC for some essential checking I have some handy apps installed in my iPhone. Pingdom of course mentioned in a previous post VNC client for connecting to PC or server pTerm SSH terminal connection for when only the command line will do 🙂 WordPress for IOS for blogging/comment approving on the move. All of these are free – some have full on versions with added features which I may eventually need but these suffice for...
Read MoreTo keep an eye on my websites I use a tool called Pingdom. What it basically does is checks up on your website at a set period of time (eg 15 minutes) to make sure the pages get returned okay. It lets me relax safe in the knowledge that should the untoward happen and something fails on the server, then I get an email/text saying so. For the small fee it costs me it’s well worth it – keeping a client’s website up and running as close to 100% of the time is...
